Gavin & Meloney's wedding day

On the 17th December I attended the wedding of Gavin and Meloney. The venue was the Burnside Hotel at Bowness which over looks Lake Windermere. It is a wonderful venue to get married and appeared to be well well organised. It was a very cold day so we did not spend too much time outside, however, everyone was very much in a Christmas spirit and the whole event was a very happy affair. It was the first time that I have used my High Definition 1080p video camera to capture some movie footage to include in the wedding album slideshow. This will be a new feature that will be included in many of my 2011 wedding packages.

I love this picture, it was taken just after a very emotional speech by Meloney's farther.

Andrew and Claire had their fairytale wedding, they had hoped for a snowy, wintery scene and that's exactly what they got. They chose Armathwaite Hall for the venue which is fantastic on any normal day but in the snow is was just magical. The mist was lifting a little from the snow and lake and Andrew and Claire were more than happy to brave the cold to get some great pictures outside. I recently spoke to Claire on their return from their Lapland honeymoon and she is delighted with the photographs and received this message from her.

"Just wanted to say a huge thank you for the hard work and effort you have put in, the photos are amazing. You really captured the atmosphere and I can't help but smile every time I look at them. A few of my friends have just got engaged and I will definitely be recommending you to them for their wedding days"

Keswick School Prom

The venue for the Keswick School Prom was the Green Hills Hotel near Wigton. These events are alway fun to photograph and it was certainly as intense few hours of none stop clicking. Even the studio lights were starting to complain by the end of the evening. Thank you to everyone who came to have thier pictures taken and the response afterwards has been fantastic.

Cockermouth Floods video

In November 2009 Cumbria suffered the worst floods in living memory and one town in particular made the headlines, Cockermouth. This is my story of the events of 19th / 20th November, from the begining of the waters overwelming the town and coming into our house, to our rescue the following day by the RNLI. I put this video together one year on from the floods.

Coniston Speed Week

I was down in Ambleside to meet with a couple of clients regarding their wedding. Afterwards, I decided to nip across to Coniston to see if any of the boats were running for the Coniston Speed Week which is held there annually. I arrive just before the lunch break so only had chance to photograph a couple of the boats running but it is great to see this sort of spectacle on some of our Lake district waters and I just hope that they carry on for years to come.

Mucking about in the studio

I had some new Bowens studio lights arrive ready for the Keswick School prom that was in a couple of weeks. So I decided to check everything was working fine and set them up in the studio. Now my 20 month old son Ben, is a curious sole and it wasn't long before his inquisitive streak set in and he had to see what was going on and of course get involved, I love the results though.

On the 30th October I travelled down to the Westmorland Hotel near Orton to photograph the wedding of Thomas and Lizzie. The weather was not kind on this day and the wind especially was bad. Normally there is an opportunity to head out the back of the hotel to take pictures with the moorland in the background, but today the only chance we had of any outdoor shot was just out of the front door.

Craig and Sarah's wedding

Craig and Sarah's wedding was held at the Red Admiral near Gosforth. This was the first wedding the venue had organised here and although the area where the service was a little challenging for photographs, the reception marque was great and the food was fantastic. I understand that they do intend to continue to make improvements to the venue so hopefully I will be photographing a few more weddings there. Craig and Sarah's theme for the wedding was the 'God Father' and had also asked if I could produce a few selective colour photographs, my favorite one was of the wedding party lent against the bar.

Matthew and Lisa's wedding

It was my first visit to this church and I was completely surprised and impressed by the building, from the outside it looked like any other church but the interior was very grand. Wedding Fayre

On the 28th August, I attended the wedding of Michael and Donna who live in Kendal. First task of the day was to visit Donna at her home and to get some pre-wedding makeup and hair pictures. Sarah from Beauty Simply was doing all the hard work preparing the bride and bridesmaid, leaving me to snap away. The service was held at the Staveley Chuch and then onto the great venue of Netherwood Hotel at Grange over Sands. The car for the day was supplied by 'A Touch Of Class' who are based in Workington and always supply a great service.

Germany WRC

Between the 19th & 23rd August, myself and a good friend headed off to Germany to photograph the World Rally Championship that was being held there. The rally was based in one of Germany's oldest towns, Trier, which is a fantastic place to stay. After three days photographing the rally we then finished our road trip with a stop off in the Belgium town of Bastogne, which was the scene of a major battle during the Second World War made famous by the film 'Battle of the Bulge'. We visited the huge and impressive Mardisson War Memorial there.

Last Saturday I had a trip up to Scotland for Peter and Becca's wedding. The venue was at thier home just outside of Glasgow. They had gone to huge efforts, to make the day very special. Even have a large marque errected in the garden. The weather, again was great, even though during the week before it had rained almost non-stop. I had this brief text message from Peter as they were heading to the airport for thier honeymoon. "Very happy bride Chris, well done fella. Great cross section of photographs, many thanks"

On the 05th June, I was at the Hunday Manor Hotel, Winscale near Workington to photograph the wedding of Brian and Hayley. The weather was fantastic and the couple had a great day. A couple of the pictures taken from the day have been entered in a competition so hopefully at the end of this month I will know how they have got on. Brian and Hayley are currently on thier honeymoon and have not had chance to view the photographs however I have received this message from Hayley's mother.

David & Jennie's wedding day.

David and Jennie got married on the 14th May at Lodore Falls Hotel, the couple had chosen the hotel for it's fantastic location in the borrowdale valley, near Keswick. Borrowdale was once described as the wettest place in England, fortunately the weather held long enough for us to get some great pictures with some moody skies, up at Ashness Bridge and Surprise View. Soon after I had put David and Jennie's photographs online I received this message from them.

"Just had a look at our wedding pictures and we'd both like to thank you very much, they are fantastic!"

Ascough & Terakopian photography workshop.

On the 25th & 26th April I was privileged to be attending a photography workshop in Edinburgh. Running the course was Jeff Ascough, he is described as one of the top ten wedding photographers in the world, he is a Canon ambassador and a remarkable character. His guest speaker was Edmond Terakopian, a true legend in the photojournalistic world. He has travelled the world capturing some of the most iconic images from war zone to humanitarian disasters, fashion show to airshows. His images tell a true story and to have an insight to Edmonds way of working was very special.

Hello to everyone, hoping your year is starting out well and this weather has not caused to much disruption? Here in west Cumbria we certainly didn't have the amount of snow that the rest of the country seem to have had, however, the ice has certainly caused a few issues.

The weather and break from weddings in January has allowed me to pursue a love of being up in the wintery mountains. The conditions up there have been superb, but would certainly be very tricky for anyone ill prepared with deep snow, icy tracks and an extremely nippy windchill factor which at on point was around -30 degrees!

This has certainly been a very eventful year, the birth of our baby son was very much the highlight in February, however, the year has certainly had it's fair share of lows, one of these being the floods in November, which is still affecting Cumbria with alot of people and families including us being displaced for Christmas and New Years.

I am glad to be able to say the after a few set backs with my photography buisness during this time things seem to be running smoothly again and am looking forward to the challenges of 2010 and hopefully some new enquiries regarding my wedding photography service.

Flood update

As you could probably imagine, it's been fairly stressful for alot of people in the past couple of weeks with the major floods that have affected us here in Cockermouth. We have now managed to find new accomadation just outside of town, however, hopefully we will be back in town at the beginning of the new year. I have very limited internet access currently, should you be interested in my photography services then it would be best to contact me via my mobile phone.

Well as you may all be aware from the news west Cumbria had been hit by flooding. Being in Cockermouth and living a few metres away from the river has resulted in our house being underwater. Our thanks go out to the emergency services for there amazing work, we were rescued after 24hours trapped upstairs with our 9 month old son and 2 dogs.

The Whitley Bay RNLI managed to get a small inflatable boat to the back of our house where we were then taken to the offices behind the Main Street. We then had to climb two storeys of scaffolding, through the office windows then back down the scaffolding the other side to a boat waiting for us on Main Street.

With regards to my photography, I have managed to save a good part of my equipment and will be planning on attending the weddings that I have booked in the next few weeks and will be able to continue the same quality of service.

Accommodation has been a major issue as you can imagine with so many other families needing places to live. We have very kindly be offered a cottage at Thursby to stay in until we manage to get back into Cockermouth. Currently we have to thank friends in the town for letting us stay with them and also supplying clothing, equipment and toys for our baby son.

We will be aiming to have as much as possible back to a bit of normality within a couple of weeks and as with the rest of the Cumbrian community will be working very hard to bring business back to our lovely town.

Southport Airshow.

On the 27th September I was at Southport for the Airshow, while I was there I was trying my hand at aviation photography, its not the easiest of tasks but was fun trying. The highlights of the day were of course the Red Arrows also the Euro Fighter which was incredibly loud and to close the show was the incredible Vulcan which managed to set off alot of the car alarms.

It's not very often that I would post a letter on my blog, however, I received a letter from the Mother of the Bride after a recent wedding up in the Scottish Borders and it was such a pleasent compliment that I thought I would share it.

Since Sunday I have been drawn to your website everyday to have another look at Michelle's and Duncan's photos.

We all had an absolutely fantastic day and the photos are amazing. I keep scrolling through and can't quite believe that I'm looking at my daughter!! I can't wait to see them all.

Malcolm Wilson Rally 2009

Yesterday I was again one of the offical photographers out taking pictures of this Cockermouth based event. The rally attracts 1000's of fans to the Cumbrian stages which include Whinlatter Forest, Grizedale Forest and Greystoke forest. The event this year was won by Steve Perez in a Ford Focus world rally car.

On Friday 20th February at 12.40pm my wife Rachel, gave birth to a little baby boy weighing 6lbs 2oz. Mum and baby are currently doing fine, so a whole new chapter of life and photography begins. As most parents, I wanted to try capture these early days and managed to get some pictures when he was only 10 miniutes old.

Coledale horseshoe MTB

Last Sunday we went on an epic mountain bike ride up into the mountains. It was perfect weather that was cold and very clear, the route started with a hike up Grizedale Pike which took around 1h 30mins, the views from the top were amazing and made it worth the effort. We then had a small decent, then another couple of climbs before the final 3 1/2 miles of decent to complete the Coledale Horseshoe.

The weekend that we have the floods in Cockermouth was also an eventful one because the OMM or Original Mountain Marathon was being held up in the fells. I was contacted by the Sunday Times newspaper to take some pictures of the emergency shelter that had been set up just outside of Cockermouth. This is where the Mountain Rescue Teams were bringing down some of the stranded competitors. Some of my photographs were also used by ITV Border News and also BBC Look north.

Last night the River Cocker and Derwent broke the flood barriers and the water came into our street at around 2am and didn't stop rising until 5am, once we had put the sand bags out then there was nothing left to do except take some pictures. First light this morning the water had started dropping, however, the rivers still remain very high.

With the wedding season starting to tail off its giving me more time to get out on the bike for a bit of fun. Today me and a couple of friends went up to Newcastleton in the Scottish Borders. Once we had complete the main trail we went for a play on the 'North Shore' section. Its always good fun to see how many time you fall into the undergrowth.
